As you might know, I love Glee and the actors who play Rachel and Finn(Lea Michele and Cory Monteith respectively), but one thing that has been bothering me lately is Lea Michele’s support of PETA. My issue with PETA(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is that they are horrible advocates for animal rights. Personally I think a better organization to support if you are into animal rights is the Humane Society. I’ll start a little by stating my position on animal rights. I consider myself pro-animal rights and while I am not a vegetarian or vegan, I certainly understand people who choose that lifestyle. I would like to think I like most other people do think that animals do deserve to do free from cruelty and suffering. I do not however think that all animals are should be treated equally, I believe we should allot rights to animals based on their cognitive abilities. I feel that it is perfectly justifiable to eat fish, bivalves(oysters, calms, mussels, etc.), and chicken. I also believe it is generally fine to test medicines and medical procedures on animals as long as they are treated humanely and that the no alternative can be found.
I will start with PETA’s tactics, I feel that they are usually tasteless and insensitive. If they are neither tasteless or insensitive then they just seem like a joke. I’ll start with a joke; in September 2008 they suggested to Ben and Jerry’s ice cream to use human breast milk instead of cow’s milk. First I would like to defend PETA a little bit before I criticize their suggestion. It is would be perfectly fine to drink or consume human milk, if you can drink cow’s milk. Logically there’s no real significant chemical difference between the two, both have calcium and fat etc, etc. The problem with their suggestion (as the cast of the Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe have pointed out) is that it is simply not feasible to use human milk instead of cow’s milk. First of all, a single dairy cow could produce a lot more milk than a woman could. Second, does PETA really assume there are thousands of women out there willing to milk themselves? If their suggestion was not serious, then I have to ask “Don’t you have better ways to reach out to people without being seen as ridiculous lunatics?”. Moving on to my other criticism of PETA’s publicity tactics is that they can be very insensitive, offensive and sometimes borderline racist. In February 2009, PETA protesters stood outside Madison Square Garden in white hoods looking like the KKK. They say the American Kennel Club was trying to create “master race”. In May 2009, to protest the Canadian seal hunt they called for a boycott of Canadian maple syrup. I would agree with the blogger I linked to and say that that stunt borderlines on being racist. Another insensitive stunt of theirs was to use the murder of a doctor who provided abortions to start an ad campaign! Does PETA have no tact?
My next issue with PETA is the facts they use bad scientific facts to support their point of view. A prime example is their “Got Autism” ad campaign. As neurologist Steven Novella pointed in the podcast I linked to milk doesn’t cause autism. Also, PETA what’s with your “Got Zits?” campaign? It is far from conclusive that milk causes acne. PETA, don’t just go looking for any evidence to support your point of view.
All I ask of PETA is to stop using shock value to promote your cause. You are just doing more harm than good to the animal rights movement. I love Lea Michele, Drew Barrymore, and Paul McCartney and the work they do, but can you guys distance yourselves from PETA a little please? I would hope some of you would put your support behind the Humane Society, instead of PETA. I hope that at the very least people who support animals rights apply more critical thinking skills when they consider supporting PETA.
Ok, I’ve realized it’s slightly harder to ignore pop culture then I would have thought. This morning I turned on to MSNBC and noticed there was a news ticker that shows entertainment news along with everything else. Also, one of the first stories they showed was about Mel Gibson! Fortunately I changed channel right away. Anyways here’s some additional rules to limit my pop culture intake.
13.Do not read news tickers.
14.I will avoid looking at magazine covers and posters for new movies.
15.I will not watch trailers for new movies.
That’s it for now.
Update:I’ve noticed I’ve been looking up a couple of celebrities on Wikipedia hence this new rule:
16.I will not look up any celebrities on Wikipedia except those who star on Glee.
July 18, 2010
I think I’m a little too into celebrity/pop culture. I can’t go a week with out googling news of Scarlett Johansson. I think i know too much crap(ie. who Justin Bieber is, what “Jersey Shore”is. etc.) that is just pointless knowledge. Therefore, I think ill give up pop culture from now until the this day(July. 18) next year. I hope by this time next year ill be completely pop culture ignorant. I will make some exceptions, I still can’t give up “Glee” or “House”, but I will try hard to avoid pop culture news as much as possible. I will outline my plan as follows. For the next year I will do the following:
1.I will not read any entertainment magazines like: People, Rolling Stone, etc…
2.I will not read any celebrity interviews published after August 1 with anybody except for: Cory Monteith and Lea Michele.
3.I will not read, listen or watch any movie reviews done after today.
4.I will only watch “Infomania” once in 2009, and one more time in 2010; I will avoid the first part which usually deals with news.
5.I will press mute when i see celebrity news on T.V. and walk away.
6.My only authorized source of pop culture news will be twitter, gleeforum.com, the Gleeful podcast and facebook.
6a.I will not add any new celebrities to follow on facebook or twitter.
7.I will skip all interviews Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have with singers and actors and actresses.
8.I will not watch any movies released after today.
9.I will not watch any television shows except for “Glee”, “House”, “The Colbert Report”, “The Daily Show”, “Futurama”, and anything Lea Michele and Cory Monteith guest star on.
10.I will unsubscribe from the Gleeful podcast until the show starts again but I will allow myself to listen to two episodes before the season 2 premiere.
11.I will allow myself to watch this years Teen Choice Awards and the Emmys.
12.I will not listen to any music released after today(except for the music from Glee of course).
I think that should be about it… i’ll add anymore that I can think of later. Anyways I get this starts now!
I’ve been wondering for a while if the six degrees of separation idea is true. Next thing I was wondering is if the six degrees of separation is true is that could I meet a celebrity(or celebrities). If I could meet I dunno… Scarlett Johansson or the cast of “Glee” with just a couple of e-mails that would be so cool. One of these days I will try it. It would just be awesome to meet Cory Monteith(or Chris Colfer, or Kevin McHale, or Lea Michele). Anyways I got a hit from someone searching for Cory Montieth.
I’ve been watching Glee from the beginning by now and I am a huge fan of the show(I can’t remember if i saw the Pilot when it first aired in May of 2009 or if it was September 2009). Anyways as I’m writing I have developed a huge Glee obsession after I watched the finale episode and I can’t figure out why. I’ve always liked the show and it’s not like the show is ending or anything(it’s been picked for two more seasons). I like the show because it’s different, I love the characters and so far it’s only had two episode I haven’t really liked(The Madonna episode and “Home”). While some critics point out some continuity issues, I personally don’t think they are too distracting and I think most fans will let them pass. Anyways, back to the point, I can’t figure out why I’m obsessed with Glee now! One possible explanation I can think of right now is that my inner finchel shipper has finally been pleased and I just can’t wait for season 2 when their relationship gets explored further. Well, thats all i can think of for now.
btw… lately I’ve been thinking to my self Lea Michele is pretty hot.
